How technology is redefining tourism in East Africa

I recently joined a panel on tourism and technology at the Miss Tourism East Africa event at the Marriott. Our main point: digital tools are no longer optional extras for tourism businesses. They are the engines of growth.
Channel managers and real-time sync
Modern channel managers let hotels and lodges keep rooms, prices and availability in sync across every sales channel at once. That ends double bookings and puts a property in front of far more travellers.
Direct booking engines
A good booking engine on your own website lets guests book without friction. It cuts commission costs and lets you shape the guest’s experience from the very first click.
Virtual tours and Google Earth
Tools like Google Earth and 360° virtual tours have changed how people choose where to go. Instead of a few static photos, travellers can explore a destination before they ever board a plane.
Why it matters for the region
Technology can connect East Africa’s cultural heritage and landscapes with the global travel market. With tech-driven operations, the industry can grow sustainably, reach new travellers, and give visitors a smoother experience end to end.
How is technology changing the way you travel, or the way you run your tourism business? I’d like to hear about it.
